Kollu rasam is good to have when you got cold. In my home, if anyone gets cold, the next day we prepare this rasam. I have already mentioned about the health benefits of Kollu in my previous post Kollu paruppu Masiyal.
Ingredients:
Horse gram/Kollu - 1 cup
Tamarind – 1 gooseberry size
Garlic- 6-7 cloves
Mustard – 1 tsp
Red chilies – 2
Curry leaves
Salt as required
Black pepper - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds/Jeera – 1 tsp
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Chili powder – 1/2 tsp
Methi powder – 1/4 tsp
Method:
Soak the
horse gram for 5 hours or overnight. This step is to make the cooking process
easy and reduce fuel consumption as well to cook.
First cook
the horse gram for 10 whistles adding 3 cups of water, little oil and curry
leaves.
Once the
pressure subsides, drain the water completely.
Now extract
juice from tamarind.
Heat oil in
a pan. Add mustard seeds. When it splitters, add red chilies and curry leaves.
Add tamarind
juice and turmeric powder, chili powder and methi powder. Boil for 5 mins.
Take pepper
and cumin seeds in a blender. Blend it to a coarse powder.
Now add
garlic cloves and few curry leaves. Grind it coarsely giving 1 pulse.
Add the
mixer to the rasam.
Now add the
reserved water from Kollu. Add a pinch of asafetida and coriander leaves.
Do not roll
boil. When it is frothy switch off the flame.
Transfer to
serving bowl and close with lid till you serve.
Note:
Always close
the rasam nicely with a lid till you serve.
You can also
add tomato. But we don’t add in my home.
I did not
add coriander leaves as I did not have it in handy.
