Broken Wheat Upma / Rava Upma

Broken wheat upma is godhumai upma in Tamil. This is very easy to cook if you have the broken wheat handy. After returning from office, I think to prepare this only when I feel very tired. Lets see how to prepare this simple rava upma.

Let us see how to prepare this.

Ingredients:
Broken wheat – 1 cup
Water – 2 cups
Onion – 1 big
Red chili – 5
Curry leaves
Coriander leaves
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Channa dal – 1 ½ tsp
Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp

Method:
Chop the onion finely in lengthy way. Pinch the red chilies.
In a sauce pan, roll boil water.
Meantime, take oil in a wide mouth pan.
Add mustard seeds and when it splutters, add urad dal and channa dal.
Once the dal changes to golden color add onion, red chilies and curry leaves.
When the onion changes to golden color, add the broken wheat rava and fry for 3 min nicely
Now add the boiling water and required salt to this and mix well and cook in full flame closing the lid.
When the water reduced, simmer the flame to the lowest, close the lid and cook for 5 min.

Now drizzle 1 tbsp of coconut oil and mix well. Switch off the flame
Garnish with coriander leaves and close the pan tightly with a lid.
Serve after 10 mins. So that the coconut oil flavor will be mixed with rava completely.
I like to have this rava with curd. My hubby like to have with refined sugar.

Note:
Wheat rava has to be cooked very well if you are giving for infants. So add 2 ½ cups of water for 1 cup of rava. Again it depends on the quality of rava you are using.
My family likes any umpa in coconut oil. You can your regular cooking oil. That time do not add the extra oil at last.
You can add cumin seeds also for tempering.
If you have time then you can make sambar or coconut chutney for this.
